Lone Wolf

The sunlight splintered

On the snow-trimmed trees

The shining mountains

Hung soundless above me

As I skied beside the silent river

My heart sang a quiet song

In the empty stillness

Then he was there

My lone wolf

Silver coat outlined in light

Creature of fierce beauty

We gazed at each other

Two strange beings

From different worlds

I loved him as he stood so still

Before he turned off into the shadows

Lonely old wolf!

Alone in the glittering afternoon

Who remembers your beginnings?

Who remembers your love

The love now gone?

Who remembers your strength

Foremost among the pack?

Who will know your end

Alone, going into darkness?

I will remember!

I will remember how I loved you

That silver afternoon
